I’m trying to find protein bars that I like so that I have something quick to grab in a pinch. After I try a small variety, I’ll do a round-up of what I liked and didn’t.
Quest Bar – Cinnamon Roll
This one had such promise. The first thing I did when I opened it was sniff it. What? You don’t sniff your food?
It smelled heavenly – just like a cinnamon roll!
Sadly, it did not taste the way it smelled.
The flavor… how can I describe it? Think a cinnamon-coconut flavored tootsie roll. And yes – it had the texture of a tootsie roll. And nothing about that is appetizing. I was baffled by the coconut flavor (one of my least favorite flavors in the world, by the way) because it was cinnamon roll flavored. But I looked up the ingredients, and it’s made with palm oil – which apparently tastes like coconut to me (though they say it tastes like carrots??).
Threw it away after one bite – will definitely not buy again.
Luna Protein Bar – Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
Now this bar was a pleasant surprise. I can’t eat a whole one – they’re so dense they fill up my tummy very quickly. It still tastes like a protein bar and has the dense texture of a protein bar. But it really does taste like cookie dough. I expected it to be like cookie dough ice cream – a neutral flavored bar with chunks of “cookie dough” in it, but the whole bar is just cookie dough flavored.
It’s extremely rich. But it leaves behind a nice buttery aftertaste that feels decadent and very much as if I shouldn’t be eating it! The biggest downfall of this bar is that it doesn’t have as much protein as other protein bars – only 12 grams – but it is about half the size of a Quest Bar.
I will definitely eat this one again, and I look forward to trying new flavors.
thinkThin – Brownie Crunch (WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER)
This protein bar is everything I ever hoped for in a protein bar. It’s delicious. The texture isn’t weird. It has just the right amount of sweetness.
There is, however, a price to pay for this deliciousness. One bar has 230 calories. That’s more calories than a standard bariatric meal contains. Luckily, I can only eat about half of this bar in one sitting. I definitely look forward to trying more flavors.
Lenny & Larry’s Muscle Brownie – Triple Chocolate
Have you ever tasted pure disappointment? It tastes of baby tears and sadness. This brownie tastes like that.
First, it’s hard as a brick. After the first bite, I stuck it in the microwave for 10 seconds to soften it up (this worked), but it didn’t help the taste. Because I didn’t want to waste the protein, I finished my half of the bar (OH YEAH – ONE SERVING IS HALF A BROWNIE), and chucked the rest right into the trash.
I’ve been told the cookies are great, so this isn’t the last we’ll see of good ol’ Lenny & Larry.
There’s a pretty clear winner in this bunch – thinkThin.
Sometimes I think my tastebuds must be broken because people in the WLS community simply *rave* about diet foods and protein products. But here’s the deal: I like food to taste good. Now that I’ve had my surgery, I don’t get much food at all so what little I do get needs to be DAMN GOOD. These reviews are brutally honest and hopefully provide a bit of a laugh too.
I’m not posting full nutritional information on these because protein bars are protein bars, and if you’re reading this you probably care more about the taste anyway.
