Sweet cheeses, I can eat FOOD again!
Today I am 2 weeks post-op, and I had my 2 week appointment with the nutritionist, Maria Tucker. She’s pretty awesome, y’all. She’ll work with you if something in your diet isn’t working for you – and she responds to email while on vacation!
I had my surgery through the Duke Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery Center. Duke’s food plan seems to vary from the “standard” plan that a lot of programs offer. My research indicated that most plans have a day or two or liquids, then a week or so of pureed foods, and then you move to real foods.
Duke’s plan is a bit more conservative than that.
Weeks 1 & 2 Post-op: Modified Full Liquids (Duke does not allow sugar free jello on this stage)
Weeks 3 & 4 Post-op: Stage 1 Soft Foods
- Dark meat chicken (no white meat until stage 2), thinly sliced deli meat, white fish, imitation crab, fat free cheese, beans, tuna, scrambled or poached eggs, greek yogurt.
- Soft cooked vegetables, unsweetened applesauce, mashed banana, mashed sweet or white potato, oatmeal, cream of wheat, grits.
Weeks 5 – 10 Post-op: Stage 2 Soft Foods
- All chicken (yippee), ground beef or turkey, hard boiled eggs, small shrimp, heartier fish like salmon, crab.
- TOAST. Fresh fruit without the peel.
In both stages of soft foods, my goals are 60-80 grams of protein and 700-800 calories/day. I can’t take more than 30 minutes to eat, and I’m supposed to eat 5-6 times per day. 2 oz (by volume, not weight) or 1/4 cup of protein each meal, plus a tablespoon or two of veggies/starches. If you’re full after the protein, you don’t get the veggies.
I’m struggling with getting those calories in. During the liquids stage, I averaged 300-400 calories per day, and I have to somehow double that. Oy vey! But I also can’t yet eat the full amount I’m supposed to, so I think it’ll be easier once I’m eating 1/4 cup 5-6 times per day (can we say food prep?).
So let’s talk about my progress since surgery.
I’ve seen some folks talk about losing 20+ pounds in the first two weeks after surgery, so I was a teeny bit bummed when I didn’t do the same. But you know what? I still lost weight. I lost more weight in those 2 weeks than I’ve ever lost in a 2 week period. So guess what? I AM WINNING AT MY LIFE RIGHT NOW.
