I’m trying to find protein bars that I like so that I have something quick to grab in a pinch. After I try a small variety, I’ll do a round-up of what I liked and didn’t.
Luna Protein Bar – Chocolate Peanut Butter
I actually ate the whole bar! Usually I can only eat half of my protein bars. I think I waited too long to eat and was SO HUNGRY. I can normally still only eat a few bites, but these bars are smaller than regular protein bars.
This bar was no Reese Cup or anything, but it was quite tasty. It even had that candy bar feel that we so often miss after surgery. I would choose this one over the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough one I’d previously tried. The only thing that makes me hesitate to grab this bar is that the protein content is low compared to other bars (only 12g vs 20g), But some days, that’s okay (especially since I usually only eat half of the others anyway)!
thinkThin – Chocolate Fudge
Okay, in the last roundup this brand was the clear winner with the Brownie Crunch flavor. This flavor isn’t quite as good, but it’s still very good. This brand remains at the top of my list, despite the higher calorie content. There is almost always a price to pay for deliciousness. 🙁
Quest Bar – Double Chocolate Chunk
I’m beginning to think that I’m not going to find a flavor of Quest Bar that I like. The best thing I can say about this bar is that it wasn’t awful. It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t awful either. Would I voluntarily choose to eat it again? No. If it were the last food on earth and I didn’t want to starve? Yes, I would eat it. Am I going to give up on Quest Bars? I am not! I’ve got two more flavors to try – and I’m going to try turning them into cookies to see if that helps!
Lenny & Larry’s The Complete Cookie – Birthday Cake (BAZINGA PUNK!)
OH MY GOODNESS. Words cannot accurately describe how freaking AMAZING this cookie is. I was dubious after last week’s experience with Lenny & Larry. That brownie was just downright awful. But people kept insisting the cookies were good, so I bought a few to try. This is the only flavor I’ve tried so far, and it’s the first “protein bar” I’ve had that doesn’t actually taste like diet food. It tastes like an honest to god cookie. And a birthday cake. Quite frankly, it’s heavenly. I will follow that up with one caveat. I had a friend try it, and her reaction was, “It’s really not that bad!” She could still tell that was “healthy”. I’m assuming that my months of low calorie and low sugar and low carb eating has primed my tastebuds for these cookies (they are NOT sugar free – 15g of sugar per serving).
The only thing to be careful of is that, like the brownie, one cookie is TWO SERVINGS. I wouldn’t have been able to eat the whole cookie anyway (they’re large), but it’s a bit misleading the way it’s packaged. I’ve learned that you CAN buy 2oz cookies (these are 4), which will be next on my list once I finish taste testing flavors.
Well the clear winner this week is, surprisingly, Lenny & Larry! I have no idea how one company can make one item so bad and another so good. It’s an enigma. Wrapped in a paradox. Surrounded by protein.
Of the others, there’s only one that I wouldn’t voluntarily choose to eat again – and of course, it’s the Quest Bar. Maybe one of these days I’ll have a positive thing to say about them… but don’t hold your breath.
