I don’t officially have a pre-op diet (yet). My pre-op appointment is next Thursday, less than a week before my surgery date. I don’t think my surgeon has a hard and fast pre-op diet like so many surgeons do. I’m fairly certain I’ll only have to do a one-day liquid diet the day before surgery (but I’ll find out for sure next week).
However, I know myself and my body. When I give up carbs, sugar, and caffeine I end up one miserable son-of-a-bitch. Why would I put myself through that at the same time I’m traumatizing my body with a surgery to remove most of an internal organ? That’s one big NOPE.
So at this point, I’ve been caffeine-free for 5 days now (that one is usually the hardest for me, so I started early).
I picked June 1st as my start date because – hello – it’s the first day of the month! It’s a natural starting place! Plus it gives me two weeks for my body to start adjusting to healthier foods and fewer calories. I had, of course, planned to write about all of this yesterday. But yesterday was a bad day. I was HANGRY.
I thought I’d planned enough food for the day, but after having my final “food funerals” over the holiday weekend, my body straight up rebelled. I mostly hung in there though; I did go over my calorie goal by 200ish calories. And I did that by adding a handful of Triscuits (when this girl is hangry, bring me ALL the carbs) and a few pieces of Dove Mint Chocolate. I count it as a win. I didn’t go crazy and get fast food or eat the entire box of Triscuits. That’s a pretty big deal.
I’m taking this time as an opportunity to test out various protein supplements to see what I like (though I’ve heard that your tastebuds can change drastically after surgery). Last night, I tried adding Unjury’s unflavored protein to one of my favorite dishes… and nope! It basically made my food taste like… not food. I’ve asked around and it seems that Genepro is supposed to be truly tasteless. I ordered a sample, so we’ll find out soon enough!
Protein I Like:
- Premier Protein RTD Chocolate
- Isopure Zero Carb RTD Grape & Alpine Punch (I have other flavors to try as well)
- Syntrax Nectar – so far I’ve only tried a recipe, but it was tasty. If you mix Fuzzy Navel with Vanilla and add it to milk, it tastes like an Orange Julius when you blend it with ice!
Protein I Hate:
- Premier Protein RTD Vanilla – this is cloyingly sweet to me. But I bought a case, so I’m going to have to find some use for it.
- Unjury Strawberry Sorbet
- Unjury Unflavored
I am still having a hard time slowing down when I eat and not drinking when I eat. Both are such engrained habits that breaking them is hard! I’m hoping that the effects of the surgery will help (well, I know I’ll have to slow down or I’ll barf).
